Sintesi

Citazioni in lingua originale

"If you have ever wondered how your child manages to hold their new identity together, look at what they are protected from as much as at what they are performing. The trans-identified adolescent rarely lives inside one consistent world. They live inside two or three of them, and they can only move between those worlds because the walls stay up. At home they may be called by their old name and be enfolded, cuddled, fed, laundered, funded. At school or online they may be someone else entirely, addressed by a chosen name, protected from parental knowledge by teachers or friends. When the two worlds brush against each other, they collapse a little; and in that collapse you can see how thin the walls actually are... A bubble is not merely a division; it is a fragile enclosure that requires the outside pressure to be kept off. The child inside is protected from the harsher facts of their situation because someone, somewhere, is holding the walls in place. When a daughter tells her mother she plans to medicalize her body one day and in the next breath uses that mother’s credit card to book an outdoor leadership course, both moves can only coexist because the material realities have not yet knocked on her door. Nobody has told her that the money set aside for launching her adult life may not be there if she is planning to jeopardize her health. Nobody has said that the sleeping bag she is packing was purchased with a body she intends to alter. She can afford both fantasies at once because someone else is paying the tuition on each of them. Inside this bubble sits the phenomenon parents will recognize immediately as having your cake and eating it too. The daughter wants to be seen as a boy at her sport but agrees to sleepovers because everyone is technically a girl. The son wants access to the women’s sauna at eighteen but wants his mother to cook dinner tonight... The temptation for parents is either to shatter the bubble in a single confrontation or to leave it entirely alone. Neither approach works. A single confrontation typically produces the very rupture the child has been rehearsing for; they take the collision as proof that the parents cannot be trusted and retreat further into their compartmentalized worlds, sometimes moving sooner rather than later toward the medicalization the parents were hoping to prevent. Leaving the bubble alone, on the other hand, invites the child to sail on into legal adulthood with none of the harder facts having ever been introduced. The middle path involves something more artful: an incremental, patient, slightly disruptive reintroduction of ordinary reality, one constraint at a time.”
